The last is a shoemaker’s foundation, and can be thought of as their most closely guarded secret. With heritage and experience paving the way for excellent last development, Crockett & Jones are continually striving to design lasts with the best possible fitting qualities.
The Last Guide
It has been said that the last is the heart of a shoe; a fundamental requirement of shoemaking, the development of which cannot be compromised. A last must carry all of the aesthetics and fitting qualities a shoemaker needs from the outset. The initial phase of last making and test fitting can be a lengthy process, and it is one that is overseen by the current Managing Director, Jonathan Jones.
Over time, Crockett & Jones has been able to learn from more than a century of last making experience as they have adapted and developed each new last, crafted in Northampton. Due to continued growth in key markets throughout the world, Crockett & Jones is known globally for its diverse selection of lasts. Chronologically numbered, the lower the number, the earlier the date of origin (excluding our 140th Anniversary Last).
The Crockett & Jones ‘Last Guide’ is not a substitution for visiting a Crockett & Jones retail shop and discussing your fitting requirements with a member of our highly-trained retail staff. Having the measurements of your foot taken and test fitting your chosen pair of shoes would always be the preferred method of establishing one’s size and width fitting. The below information is intended as a guide only.

LAST 140
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2019
Last 140 is a Hand Grade Collection last launched in celebration of our 140th Anniversary. Those of you with a keen eye will note the similarity between Last 140 and Last 330, the original Crockett & Jones Hand Grade Last. You would be correct in thinking the two were linked. 140 is a blend of the 330's fore-part and the favourable fitting of the 363 back-part. The results is a last with individual character, perfect to celebrate our 140th Anniversary Collection. A Classic English round toe that flows effortlessly through the joint and into the waist and heel section. Last 140 will invariably become a staple of the Hand Grade Collection in years to come…

LAST 200
DATE OF ORIGIN: JANUARY 1934
Last 200 is a Main Collection D fitting last, with a bulbous round toe and narrow waist. After over 80 years of use already under its belt, last 200 epitomises the heritage of Crockett & Jones lasts. Due to the early inception of this last, it features a typically narrow waist, making it perfect for the unlined Chukka, a boot famed throughout Europe as an iconic Crockett & Jones style.

RETAIL ADVICE
Fitting advice from retail… Last 200 fits ½ size smaller than many lasts in our collection, due primarily to the narrower ‘D’ fitting. Aesthetically its toe box is similar to the 314, 325, and 335 lasts.
LAST 224
DATE OF ORIGIN: SEPTEMBER 1953
Last 224 is a Main Collection last with a medium round toe and generous, but not bulbous, toe depth. The remarkable fitting qualities of last 224 has certainly stood the test of time, given that it dates back to 1953. With its soft round toe, 224 falls between 325 and 335 in terms of toe box width, although 224 was an early front runner in the production of asymmetric lasts (a straighter instep), 224 has a wonderful balance that has proved to work across a variety of fitting requirements.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 224 fits true to size with a good heel fit, along with 325 (shallower toe box), 341, 236 and the new 377.
LAST 228
DATE OF ORIGIN: JANUARY 1954
Last 228 is a Main Collection last, with a medium round toe and generous toe depth. Dating back to the mid 50s, the last was developed to be used for country walking shoes and boots. In 2015, last 228 cemented itself into Crockett & Jones’s legacy, when Radnor in Black Calf appeared in James Bond’s SPECTRE.

RETAIL ADVICE
Fitting advice from retail… Last 228 fits true to size. The rugged Commando sole that often accompanies models made on this last is quite firm during the initial wear. Aesthetically its toe box is similar to the 314, 325, and 335 lasts. With the outdoor nature of this boot, keep in mind that you may want to wear heavier weight socks.
LAST 236
DATE OF ORIGIN: JANUARY 1961
Last 236 is a Main Collection last with a blunt round toe, the most traditional Crockett & Jones toe shape used for formal business Oxfords. Connaught is now the only remaining style on last 236, with an air of the English shoe trade from years gone by. There are no plans to discontinue this traditional toe shape with its slightly shorter forepart.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 236 presents one of our shorter toe shapes, and, while fitting true to size, the wearer will find the forepart depth slightly shallower. The toe shape is aesthetically similar to lasts 363 and 341.
LAST 314
DATE OF ORIGIN: OCTOBER 1993
Last 314 is a Main Collection loafer last, with a ‘high walled’ round toe. A straight last with generous fitting qualities, this loafer last has been in production for many years. Boston, the famed style on 314, is a staple for many a customer. Offering E & G width fittings and a high instep, 314 is often commented on as “comfortable from the word go”.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 314 presents one of our shorter toe shapes, and while fitting true to size, the wearers’ toes will sit relatively close to the front of the shoe. The toe shape is aesthetically similar to lasts 236, 376, 335, and 363.
LAST 325
DATE OF ORIGIN: MARCH 1995
Last 325 is a Main Collection last, with a medium round toe and increased toe depth. Now in production for over 20 years, 325 is a best-selling last with its own timeline. Famed for country styles and loafers, 325 also offers width options in both E & G. With three standout styles that are worn worldwide, the 325 collection is only enhanced with due care and attention.

LAST 335
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2000
Last 335 is a Main Collection last, with a broad round toe and increased toe depth. Cut from the same cloth as 325, 335 is potentially one of the most over shadowed lasts in the collection. 335 produces a heavy, but stylish shoe & boot. It offers plenty of room in the forepart and gives an air of fashionable wear with its Chelsea and Brogue boot offerings.

LAST 337
DATE OF ORIGIN: MAY 2001
Last 337 is a Hand Grade Collection last with a soft square toe. Deemed a forward thinking last of its time, 337 was one of the longer lasts on offer from Crockett & Jones at the turn of the century. With the likes of last 358 and 373, Crockett & Jones would now classify last 337 as one of the more classic toe shapes on offer that still proves popular today. The 337 collection has been steadily reduced with the introduction of more up-to-date lasts, although we do continue to make a core collection of English classics.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 337 fits similarly to Last 348. Aesthetically it is a slightly softer version of the 348 and 373 lasts.
LAST 341
DATE OF ORIGIN: DECEMBER 2003
Last 341 is a versatile Main Collection last, with a medium round toe. Regarded as a traditional main collection last, 341 has proven to be an excellent last for both formal business and smart casual wear. Long, but not too long, round but not too round. Established as one of the most widely used lasts in the collection, many would suggest that 341 hosts the perfect balance when buying Crockett & Jones shoes for their English heritage.

LAST 348
DATE OF ORIGIN: NOVEMBER 2004
Last 348 is a versatile Main Collection last with a square toe. It is arguably the most important last that Crockett & Jones has developed in recent times. Dating back to 2004, last 348 became the most forward thinking last of a generation of shoemakers, setting Crockett & Jones apart. Housing the largest collection of styles, 348 has become an icon in itself. In 2012, last 348 cemented itself into Crockett & Jones’s legacy as the choice last for James Bond’s SKYFALL followed by SPECTRE three years later.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 348 fits similarly to 337. The wearer may have at least an inch of space at the front of the toe box, which will not affect the heel to ball fitting as it is more for aesthetics.
LAST 360
DATE OF ORIGIN: FEBRUARY 2006
Last 360 is a Main Collection last, with a more exaggerated round toe. Often regarded as a ‘younger’ version of 341, 360 is the most elegant of the round toe lasts available. With a relatively compact collection of formal business styles on offer, 360 lends itself to the smarter end of business wear.

LAST 363
DATE OF ORIGIN: MAY 2009
Last 363 is a Hand Grade Collection last with a soft round toe, and asymmetric fitting qualities. This last is widely regarded as one of Crockett & Jones’s best fitting lasts. This is due to the slimmer back part reducing heel slippage, and a slightly narrower waist offering good arch support. Crockett & Jones’s take on a modern, but contemporary round toe, 363 suits straight cap Oxfords as well as providing the foundations to an excellent fitting Hand Grade loafer.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 363 will fit true to size. The toe shape is aesthetically similar to last 341, 360 and 236. It also has the benefits of our sculpted, closing fitting heel part.
LAST 365
DATE OF ORIGIN: MAY 2009
Last 365 is a Main Collection last, with a broad round toe. Our most generous fitting last in the collection, 365 has plenty of room in the forepart and heel, giving it a slightly asymmetric character that is perfect for high leg boots. In 2012, last 365 cemented itself into Crockett & Jones’s legacy, when Islay appeared in the Scottish Highlands during the final scenes of James Bond’s SKYFALL.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 365 is singular in look and feel, fitting true to size along with 335, 325 and 341. Typically offering one of the broadest toe box shapes in the collection.
LAST 367
DATE OF ORIGIN: JANUARY 2012
Last 367 is a Hand Grade Collection last with a soft square toe. Originally developed for the Japanese market, 367 is an updated version of the much celebrated 337. Last No.337 was deemed a forward thinking last of its time, being one of the longer more extreme lasts on offer. Last 367 offers the same, soft square toe but also features a 'clipped' heel or back-part. Technically a superior last, it forms its origins in great company following the successes of its fore-part (from 337) and back-part (from 363).

Fitting advice from retail… Last 367 will offer a slightly closer fit to 337 and 348. Aesthetically it is almost indistinguishable to 337.
LAST 373
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2015
Last 373 is a Hand Grade Collection last with a sharp chisel toe, and asymmetric fitting qualities. Sharing a back part with last 363, this last also boasts closer heel clipping reducing slippage, and a slightly narrower waist offering good arch support. With a sharp chisel toe, within the boundaries of English shoemaking, last 373 is a signature for producing the most elegant handmade English shoes of the highest regard.

LAST 375
DATE OF ORIGIN: JULY 2015
Last 375 is a Main Collection last, with a medium round toe, increased toe depth and slimmed down back part. A last that is directly associated to another, 375 shares its toe shape with 325! A development that has seen us improve upon the heel clipping to produce a closer fitting version of the highly regarded 325. 375 will more than likely become the loafer last counterpart to the 325 story.

A development that has seen us improve upon the heel clipping to produce a closer fitting version of the highly regarded 314, specifically for unlined loafers.

LAST 377
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2016
Last 377 is a Main Collection last, taking a hint of inspiration from the quirky 359. With the excellent fitting qualities of our more recent lasts, development of the 377 last is no different. Another extremely comfortable and distinctly unique last that has a shortened stick length, slimmer back-part and ‘tweaked’ toe shape (than 359). All resulting in an asymmetric, round toed and characterful last, with notions of classic English shoemaking offering a slightly broader appearance in the forepart.

LAST 378
DATE OF ORIGIN: JANUARY 2017
Last 378 is a Main Collection last that offers a heavy round toe and increased toe depth. This last offers plenty of room in the fore-part fitting – perfect for those with a wider foot. 378 also boast the new sculpted heel cup for a more secure fit in the back-part. 378 produces heavy, but stylish shoes & boots. It is a last that is often referred to as our most fashionable and contemporary last due to the movement towards oversized footwear offered by high fashion brands worldwide.

LAST 379
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2019
Last 379 is a Main Collection last with a classical round toe. Taking its toe shape (only) from the long appreciated 236 last, this updated version has been remodelled and reformed to produce an exceptional last for formal business Oxfords. The resulting last is a traditional and recognisable Crockett & Jones toe shape that has been blended with an excellent fitting and technically superior last throughout the joint, the cone, the waist and full back-part. Connaught 2 and Westgate 2 continue to carry an air of the English shoe trade excellence.

DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2022
Last 391 is a Main Collection last, with a ‘high walled’ round toe and slimmed down back part. Similar in design to the 314 and 376, Last 391 has a shorter vamp which would suit marginally lower instep. Also featuring the recently improved upon modern day ‘heel clipping’ which help promote a closer fitting back-part that best suits our loafer collection.

LAST 393
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2022
The 393 last is a new loafer last in our Main Collection. This is an elegant last, with a refined toe shape, particularly suitable for a more casual, relaxed style of Loafer. The length and proportions are standard, for a Loafer last, but the back-part has been updated to give excellent heel fitting qualities. The 393 also features a softer, slightly shallower toe box, but it does not cramp the toes.

LAST 394
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2023
Last 394, is being hailed as our best-fitting last in decades! As a Main Collection last, it takes inspiration from two of the oldest (most distinguished) lasts in the collection, the 200 and the 228. It features an asymmetric, medium and slightly bulbous round toe, plentiful in character and charm. Its asymmetric fitting qualities follows perfectly the contours of your foot, coupled with our new back-part that has already seen great success on Lasts 376, 375, 378 & 379. The new 394 makes for the perfect Chukka, Derby and Derby Boot last.

Fitting advice from retail… Last 394 fits true to size. Asymmetric in fitting, this last is often comfortable from the first wear. It has a generous toe box with plenty of room in the fore part that is coupled with our closer fitting heel.
LAST 613
DATE OF ORIGIN: APRIL 2012
Last 613 was the first of the new lasts, designed to update the Women’s Collection in 2012. With an almond toe shape this last has the versatility to suit many styles whilst offering femininity and elegance. The collection made on this last has evolved to include: oxfords, penny loafers, tassel loafers and Chelsea boots.

LAST 617
DATE OF ORIGIN: MAY 2014
Last 617 is a Women’s Collection last featuring an elongated toe with soft-almond shape. This last gives its styles an elegant look, especially if they are unlined like Cora and Angel, but the addition of a sturdy rubber sole can transform the aesthetic into something gutsier like Anna or Holly. 617 is now established as the most widely used last in the new Women’s Collection since 2012.

Fitting advice from retail… Fits true to size for width but has a longer toe shape than the other Women’s lasts so the wearer will find more room at the front of the shoe.
LAST 618
DATE OF ORIGIN: JUNE 2016
Last 618, from the Women’s Collection, is an evolution from its predecessor 615 where the outside line has been straightened making it less asymmetric and more classic in look. This last has a medium round toe shape suitable for a variety of shoe and boot styles. Initially launched for Autumn/Winter 2016 with Hattie in Tan Scotch Grain, further styles will follow later.
