Up next on our ‘Sole Variations’ series is our Single Leather Sole, a sole found on over sixty of our Main Collection styles. Our Leather soles are cut from the highest quality hides, with a strong tannage for extra durability, within our own sole and heal department in our Northampton factory. The soles then make their way into our Making Room to be paired with their chosen style. Here, the sole stitching process is underway where the soles are stitched in a groove so that it is visible from the underside of the shoe.
Once the soles are stitched, they continue their journey around our factory to our Finishing Room, where they await a number of processes. Firstly, the soles are edged trimmed to the shape of the last, one of the most precise and technically difficult roles within the Finishing Room. This is done ‘free-hand’ against a blade spinning at around 3000 RPM, an operation not for the faint hearted.
The soles and heels are then stained and hot wax is applied to the edges to provide a waterproof seal and a good shine. Various decorative finishes are also applied to the soles, such as wheeling and crowing, before a final polish completing our Single Leather Sole ready to wear.
